Today, 7 in 10 prescriptions filled in the United States are generic drugs.*
- Generic medications are FDA-approved and have the same active ingredients, indications, dosage, safety and strength as the brand-name medication.*
- Generic drugs can cost on average 80 to 85 percent less than the brand-name product.*
- Best of all, using generic drugs can help you stay out of the coverage gap.
- To find out if generics may be right for you, just ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Why do generics cost less?
When a company develops a new drug, they get a patent which allows them to be the only manufacturer of the drug. After a few years, their patents expire and many drug companies can make the same drug. As with most things, when many companies compete for your business, prices go down. So with generics you get the same benefit as before, but at a lower price.
Are generics as safe as brand drugs?
According to the FDA, they are—because a generic drug must be the same in dosage, safety, strength, how it is taken, quality, performance and intended use.
