When to Enroll
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)
The Annual Enrollment period occurs October 15 through December 7 every year. You can enroll if you have never enrolled in a Medicare prescription drug plan or if you want to switch to a new plan. Coverage begins January 1 of the following year.
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
The Initial Enrollment Period is the first chance for you to enroll when you first become eligible for Medicare. If you are about to turn 65, you can enroll up to three months before to three months after the month you turn 65.
Special Enrollment Period (SEP)
You may be granted a Special Enrollment Period by CMS allowing you to change plans during the year outside the Annual Enrollment Period. Special Enrollment Periods are time sensitive. If you are granted a Special Enrollment Period, you may choose to enroll in a WellCare plan.
Some examples of situations where you may be granted a Special Enrollment Period include but not limited to:
- You receive extra help
- You moved out of the service area
- You lost your employer group coverage
Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period (MADP)
The Medicare Annual Disenrollment Period occurs January 1st through February 14th of every year. If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you have an annual opportunity to disenroll from your Medicare Advantage Plan and return to original Medicare while being able to join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan.
